Turn an unproductive season upside down!
Updated: Feb 28
Surprise! If you're without a job, without direction, or at a crossroads these times can sometimes feel catastrophic. We lose all sense of purpose, meaning, and usefulness. However just because we are not actively engaging in society through a job per se, it doesn't mean that we stop engaging in life. It is precisely during these "blank" times of no movement that we can engage in our own lives in a very meaningful way that will have tons of impact when we enter into our next productive stage.
Here are three suggestions of how to use your time wisely during an unemployed season for example:
Reflect on how you got to where you are. You want to find out why you are here. Don't judge yourself, but be honest with yourself. Once you figure this out- address the issue. You can do this through a counselor, friend, spiritual director, groups, or a combination of such. There are plenty of free resources that you can use for your psychological, emotional, and spiritual growth during this season.
Make a schedule for yourself during the day- Just because you don't have a job, for example, does not mean that you don't need structured time. Human beings needs discipline. They thrive in discipline and grow in discipline. So make a list of 3 things that you will accomplish everyday. These can be things like cleaning the kitchen (and cleaning it well), organizing your files at home, cleaning out your closet and taking material you no longer use to the thrift shop or giving it to the homeless. And of course set aside only a block of period to apply for jobs. Give yourself a realistic goal daily i.e. 3. Look at companies that you like, companies that you use, things that are around you, within your sphere.
Listen to a podcast or watch motivating and personal development videos online. Use your time on the web and radio wisely. Stop wasting your time in other people's business online, and seek out those motivational tools that are going to help you get to where you want to go. If you're Catholic and speak Spanish Radio Guadalupe 87.7 is awesome, but I am sure there are many more. If you can find something that integrates Psychology and your Faith even better! When you don't feel the confidence or trust within yourself, well hear it from another. Your brain won't know the difference. Everything you need is inside, but there's nothing wrong with getting a reminder!
Notice how all of these are free. Yes even professional help at Community Clinics can be free. Research. You've got time, and you want to use it wisely and for your growth.
These are only a few suggestions- I've got so many more. But just thought I would get you started. A little reminder that no matter where you are in life, that is exactly where you are supposed to be, but remember that it won't be like this forever. Often times one must rest, and take a step back before we emerge as a different and more evolved person.
PS You can turn your worst anything into the greatest agent of change and trust that God trusts in YOU!
